Las Palmas is also buzzing at night, but it's a long way from the main beach holiday resorts in the south of Gran Canaria. The resort of Puerto Rico has lots of British pubs and cafes, ideal for those seeking a piece of home while abroad. Party animals should visit Gran Canaria for the Carnival in February and March when the island is at its liveliest and there are parades and celebrations lasting several weeks.

Traditional Canarian Towns & Villages – if you hire a car and venture into the interior of the island there are some charming villages to explore, including Teror which has some interesting colonial buildings and a wonderful food market on Sunday mornings. Also worth a visit is Arucas, located on a dormant volcano, the most striking feature here being the Church of San Juan Bautista, which resembles a cathedral built from black lava stone.
